The 2014 Austenesque Reviews End of the Year Summary and Awards!

Summary and Awards1

It is a new year, my Austenesque friends!  And one of my favorite things to do at this time is look back and reflect on the previous year.  What did I do in 2014?  How much was accomplished?  What were my favorite things about 2014?

In 2014, Mr. Bingley and I did a little bit less traveling than I did in 2013.  But the trips we went on were quite a big deal! 🙂  First in January we went back for a second visit to Colombia to see our wonderful family there!

And in April we went to England, which was everything I dreamed it would be and more!

IMG_3436 IMG_0607

One of the best parts of going to England was meeting some lovely Jane Austen authors and friends in person!  What a special treat!

IMG_3483 IMG_3612 IMG_0491

After that, we stayed home and enjoyed our little piece of paradise. 🙂  We started to lay the ground work for our next big adventure – buying our first house!  We hope this adventure will be fully realized in 2015.  Stay tuned!

And on the blog front, it has been quite a busy year…

~~~
Let’s see a summary, shall we?
Total Blog Posts for 2014 – 168 (22 more than last year!)
Total Reviews Posted in 2014 – 61 (6 more than last year!)
Total Authors Who Stopped by Austenesque Reviews in 2014 – 30 (Wow! Ten more than last year!)
Reading Challenges –
  • The only reading challenge I did was the, Goodreads Reading Challenge.  Which I completed!  My goal was 60, and I read 61 books in 2014.  Woot!
And because you know I love my lists and charts, here are some breakdowns:
Reviews Breakdown
20141229105921
  • Well…I do love my P&P variations, don’t I?  Can never have enough!
  • A good mix – a lot more time travel, short story anthologies, and miscellaneous reads. 🙂
Ratings Breakdown
20141224052111
  • I’ve noticed I’ve been a bit more choosy with my 5 star ratings.  After 5 years of reading and reviewing 300+ Austenesque books, I think I’ve become a little bit more discerning – not everything is a “5 stars…Amazing…Must Read.”
  • I have a very low count of books receiving less than 4 star ratings this year (just 8 total), which I’m pretty happy about.  That means I liked and loved a lot of what I read!
Jane Austen Novel Breakdown
20141231082735
  • Ahem…so this definitely shows some disparity…wouldn’t you say?  I seem to read way more P&P inspired Austenesque reads than other Jane Austen novels.  LOL! (Might be because P&P novels are much more widely published!)
  • The question is, are we happy with this disparity?  Do we like it to be almost “All Darcy and Lizzy, All the time?”  Or do we want to see more variety?  (I’d love your feedback!)
~~~

2014 was a wonderful year for reading, reviewing, and blogging!  Thank you, authors for sharing our love of Jane Austen and giving us such enjoyment through your talent!  I loved soooo many of the books I’ve read this past year, but there are some that I thought deserved to receive a little bit more recognition and praise…

~(drumroll)~

…and the awards go to…

  1. Meredith, this post is fabulous! It is so visually lovely and full of information. Plus, it is really helpful and easy to add books to my collection! Thank you! Congratulations on having such a successful year! Happy New Year!

  2. Hi Meredith! Happy New Year 2015!. I hope you are having a joyful days! And Hello readers, have a wonderful year!. Meredith, you’ve improved your results again: more reviews, more guest authors and it’s a pleasure to read your post 🙂
    I agree with you: I like very much the P&P versions and I would like to see too another jane’s characters like more stories with Emma and Knightley or Marianne and Elinor involved in mysteries why not? But it’s true that there aren’t as many novels as we would like about the others Jane’s books. I liked your awards, specially “the deception of Lyme” and “Emma and Elizabeth”, this last one I’m reading and I love it!.
    I’m very happy because Santa has gifted me three austenesque novels following your suggestions: “Steampunk Darcy”, “Pemberley celebrations” (I’m reading the Christmas stories now…sigh) and “Mr Darcy came to dinner” so I think I’ll have a beautiful stories to read for next months!.

    1. Hi Teresa! Thank you! My blog kept me nice and busy this year and I could think of very few things that I don’t mind having such a claim on my time! I’m so glad you enjoyed the awards! And I’m thrilled to hear you are enjoying Emma and Elizabeth! That story is most deserving of praise! So happy to hear you received some lovely Austenesque gifts from Santa! Pemberley Celebrations is lovely, isn’t it?

  3. Wow, I am so impressed! You do set the bar very high for all of us. I like your awards as they now give me incentive to buy and read several which I have seen mentioned but just did not take the time to check out. As many have said, “So many books, so little time!” You are amazing and thank you so much for giving us this wrap-up.

    1. Oh, Sheila! YOU set the bar high! The amount of books you read and review is something that I aspire to achieve one day! May have to wait until I retire though – lol! 🙂 Glad I can help you find some great books to read! Wishing you a wonderful 2015!

      1. Thank you but your reviews with your set style and system are so much more thorough than anything I do. I am more “off the cuff” and keep thinking I should adopt (if that is fair) your way of saying what you like, what you didn’t like so much, why, with the setting and new characters delineated. Many times I will just skip some of those since I am sure people look to your review first and then why should I repeat everything. You are the best!

    1. Thank you, Jennifer! Holidays with Jane: Christmas Cheer brought me so many hours of enjoyment and I know it will bring me many more in the future! 🙂

    1. LOL! You are too kind, but I know you read a good deal more than I do! 😉 Thank you for your kind words, I hope we have more travels this year to post about! Hope you have a wonderful 2015!

  4. Thanks so much for the wrap-up of favorites–and for all the hard work you do to bring this community to life! I’m so impressed with your grace and positivity, which sets the tone for the whole.

  5. YAY! Thanks for your wonderful list, already read several of them! I look forward to the 2015 Austenesque blogs!

    1. Congrats, Shannon! This is your second year in a row! 😉 I’M so delighted with The Persuasion of Miss Jane Austen, it deserves so much praise! Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story with us!

  6. I always look forward to your awards and much enjoyed your year end summary. (The book by Carrie Bebris was one of the first that I read. I loved it and think it may be time to read it again.) Thank you for taking the time to do this and share it with us. I love your blog and admire all you do here. You have been and are my inspiration.

    I have read several of the books on your award list and agree completely. Several of the others are on my TBR list and this just makes me want to get busy and read more. I took a little detour recently and have been reading some of the North & South variations. It has been a fun change and I do wish there were more but I am needing my ‘Darcy & Lizzy’ fix! 🙂

    As for your question ‘do we want more variety’, I do like to venture to the other JAFF books as there are some that are very well written, but must admit, I love most reading about Darcy and Elizabeth. The two books by Joana Starnes where she combines P&P with Persuasion, then with S&S satisfied both needs. I liked how she brought in the other characters but kept D&L central. For me, that was a good mix.

    Thanks again for your post and showing the pictures of your travels. It was fun.

    Happy New Year to your and Mr. Bingley. I hope it brings you many blessings, a new house, much happiness and continued good health.

    1. Hello dear Janet! I’m so glad you enjoy this post – it is one I look forward to doing every year! Your kind words overwhelm me! I often think of myself as a poor review writer, and sometimes I find it hard to figure out the best way to articulate my opinions in a review.

      LOL! hope you get your Darcy and Lizzy fix soon! Yes, I adore Joana Starnes’s books! I hope she writes another mash-up! She does them so incredibly well!

      Wishing you and your family a wonderful, happy, and healthy 2015, Janet!

    2. Thanks so much for the kind words and super encouragement, Meredith and Janet, you’re wonderful!!!!! So very happy you enjoyed them, I’m so glad they struck the right note. I think we all need our Darcy and Lizzy fix and they simply have to stay central to the story. Maybe we need new adaptations to shake things up a bit, but I think any new adaptation would still struggle to change the (yet another!!!) universally acknowledged truth that no one does sexy quite as well as Mr Darcy 🙂

  7. I am in such pleasant company with Sheila, Sophia Rose, Joana, and Carole. High fives to the five of us!

    This is a great post, Meredith. Loren made it over-the-top, didn’t she? I didn’t realize that I had more books to pick up, so I thank you very much for your awards. If your travels bring you to the west coast in 2015, I would love the opportunity to meet you and Mr. Bingley. We would have so much to chat about.

    1. I owe you so much, Joy! Thank you for bringing such support, friendliness, and conversation to my blog! I really do appreciate your visits and all the many times you share your thoughts with us! I would be thrilled to meet you, Joy! I hope that will happen soon!

  8. Hi Meredith, what a great year in review post! You’ve been so lucky with your reads this year that you’ve liked so many of them, it’s really disappointing when you spend precious reading time and then don’t enjoy the book. I have written myself a list of books I’m aiming to read this year and I’m pleased to say that quite a few of your favourites for last year feature, so I’m pleased to know I have some good reads ahead. Funnily enough I have set myself a challenge this year to read an Austenesque every month that isn’t based on Pride and Prejudice because the other works are all so good too, however, the pickings are slim! I think it’d be great if you did something similar. Happy new year and happy reading in 2015!

    1. Hi Ceri! I agree with you about reading time being precious! I’ve greatly enjoyed sharing and comparing thoughts with you on both our blogs this year! Shall we make this challenge realized together? 😉 It is true the possibilities and options are fewer, but there are some real gems out there!

      1. Yes, let’s both do it! I’m sure we can find some books which are worth reading. I love Pride & Prejudice related books but sometimes it’s nice to have a change 🙂

          1. I’d love to know what you think of that one Joy, I haven’t read either of that author’s books yet, though I have the P&P one. Did you see that there is a Mansfield Park one coming up? It’s not out yet but I saw it on Goodreads. My non-P&P Austenesque for this month is The Beresfords, which is based on Mansfield Park, and if I have time maybe Emma & Elizabeth, which is a continuation of The Watsons, as I’ve been meaning to read that one for ages 🙂

  9. Congratulations to all! I am so excited you loved KaraLynne Mackrory’s HAUNTING MR DARCY! Thank you. Happy New Year, Meredith!

  10. GREAT JOB MEREDITH! Quite the increases. I’d say branch out if it’s overwhelmingly Pride and Prejudice but that’s what I’d do. I was thinking it was pretty balanced with all the lists though. I know you have many related to Persuasion, Emma, etc. I don’t know how many you added this year.

    1. Thank you, Suzan!!! I don’t mind the things being off balanced a little, but I love to mix it up so Darcy and Elizabeth stay fresh and exciting! 🙂

  11. Meredith, I’m flattered to be in such august company. I really, really enjoyed writing Another Place in Time. It was light, fun, and historic! So I had my cake and ate it too! Happy New Year. Here’s to another year of great books.

    1. LOL! I’m so glad you had as much fun writing Another Place in Time as we did reading it, Mary! I hope you write more books that bring your such enjoyment! Thank you for the journey and for the fun history lessons!

  12. Dear Meredith,

    As is evident from your graphs, your output is absolutely daunting, and your quality is consistently superlative; this post is no exception. If you hadn’t been doing it for so long, I’d be thinking in terms of performance enhancing drugs! 😉 Seriously, your website is a sanctuary of all that is interesting, amiable, and literate; and, of course, its being dedicated to Jane makes it quite the most pleasant address on the web. For all our sakes, I hope you never stop.

    Thank you so much for choosing Darcy’s Tale; I can think of no one better qualified to judge an Austenesque book, which makes being selected that much more special.

    My very best wishes for 2015,

    Stan Hurd

    1. LOL, Stan! Your praise is far too kind! You should only know the amazing output serious and more professional bloggers, both in quality and quantity! My output pales in comparison. I very thankful and honored that you find blog to be a welcoming and informative place! Thank YOU for Darcy’s Tale! It truly is a gift to all readers, Janeites, and admirers of Mr. Darcy! Hope you have a fantastic 2015!

  13. It was fun seeing your pictures and recaps from your travels earlier in the year. Happy continued house hunting.

    I’m a big list gal so I love seeing your stats and what they tell you about your blog and habits.

    I love all the P&P based stories, but I also enjoy seeing the others get attention too as some of my favorite retellings, variations and sequels are for Persuasion and S&S. I still need to read books related to NA, Emma and MP. Fixing that this year with the challenge. Thanks for the link and shout out for Austenesque Lovers TBR Pile challenge by the way.

    Great choices for your awards. I’ve only read a few of those, but I do remember your enthusiastic reviews.
    Mary’s Time Travel was one of my favorites too as well as Alexa’s variation. I haven’t read the other books yet.

    Look forward to the new year of blog posts. Thanks for putting together such a special blog, Meredith.

    1. Thank you, Sophia Rose! I’m glad you don’t mind my rambling on and on about Mr. Bingley and our travels, or my incessant need to make lists. LOL!

      I’m the same as you – I need to read more NA, Emma, and MP related novels for sure! Wishing you a wonderful and happy 2015, Sophia!

  14. Hi Meredith. Wasn’t it a fabulous year of Jane Austen-inspired reading? I’ve just posted Austenprose’s Best Austenesque list too. We share many of the same titles. I think I am most thrilled for Christina Dudley and Ann Mychal, two underdog’s who deserve wider readership.

    I must also share that you are such an asset to the Austenesque genre Meredith. Reading 61 books in a year is astounding. Over the past five years you have honed your instincts and writing skills and if I gave away the Austenesque Reviewer of the Year award you would be top on the list.

    Not only are you a champion of the genre, with an astute eye for talent, you are one of the nicest and most generous bloggers I know.

    Wishing you a very Happy New Year with 61 new fabulous books!

    Best, LA

    1. Well said, Laurel Ann. I also read your list and have to make sure I put some of those books also on my TBR/Wish List.

    2. Wow, thank you, Laurel Ann for the amazingly kind words you said! I’m very honored by your notice and encouragement! Thank you for all you do for the Austenesque community! I found Austenprose just around the time I started blogging and you and your site have always been a source of inspiration and guide for me. Thank you for all the wonderful support and assistance you give!

      Oh I very much agree with you about Ann Mychal and Christina Dudley! Glad to hear you feel the same!

      Wishing you a fantastic 2015!

  15. Happy New Year, Meredith! What an honor and surprise! I am delighted to have made your best of 2014 list! So many great books to read (I, too, am doing the TBR Pile Challenge, but I still have to commit to a level. Your selections have just added its astronomical height). I’m off to brag. So thrilled! Thank you!

    1. Hi Alexa! Congratulations! Thank you so much for sharing with us this wonderful story and for giving us such an enjoyable read! 🙂 Hope you and your family have a wonderful 2015!

  16. Yea!! Thanks, Meredith, for selecting my “guilty pleasure” reading list for those times when I can’t lift a pen but I can lift a Kindle! So many new stories to read! Hugs!

    1. LOL! Happy to help you find some guilty pleasure reading, Colette! Wishing you a very happy 2015, filled with many enjoyable of reads and much success!

  17. Wow, Meredith! What a great post! I loved your breakdowns 🙂 I tend to read more P&P inspired Austenesque reads, too! Haha! But, yes, there are so many books inspired by P&P! 😀 Though this year I plan to read more books inspired by Jane Austen other novels! I’m glad you chose Dear Mr. Knightley as one of your absolute favourites, because I loved it, too!! And I’m really enjoying Holidays with Jane 🙂 Have a wonderful 2015 and enjoy your future reads! 😉

    1. Hi Maria! Thank you for your kind words! Since it is the bicentennial for Emma, I might try to give extra attention to that novel this year. 🙂 So happy to hear you are enjoying Holidays with Jane! I loved it! 🙂 Wishing you much happiness in 2015!

      1. Oh, right! The bicentennial!! I have to check your Comprehensive Guide to Emma, then! I’m sure I’ll find interesting books 😉
        Thank you! I hope the new year is a good one! 🙂

  18. It has been an excellent year, Meredith. I am happy that it has been so. I like very much your list. I agree with you about the book «Dear Mr. Knightley» by Katherine Reay. It’s a wonderful story. 😉 In my ranking of the 10 favorites’s book of 2014, this is third.

    I have pending to read the books as «The Madness of Mr. Darcy» by Alexa Adams, «Darcy’s Tale: Deluxe Edition» by Stanley Hurd and «The Persuasion of Miss Jane Austen» by Shannon Winslow, I will read them this 2015 😛

    We agree that we have read more about P&P, too. We cannot avoid it. 😛

    Best wishes to 2015 and happy read

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad Dear Mr. Knightley made your list too! 😉 I’ll have to go check out your rankings – as you can tell, I love these sorts of posts! I hope you enjoy all your pending reads – those are some excellent choices! Happy reading!

  19. Being on this list is such a freakin’ awesome feeling. Thank you!! Your graphs and charts are brilliant and such a fun way to look at the year. What a productive girl you were! Thanks for taking the time to review and enjoy my book!

    1. Aww! Thank you for saying so, KaraLynne! 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the charts – I’m such a visual person, I need to see things tangibly outlined like this!

  20. What an amazing year you have had Meredith and 2015 is set to be even better! You definitely set the bar high for us and I have decided to list out my reads and do up a graph on my reading habits! I have read several of the books which you have given awards to and agree with your choices though it must have been tough! I actually just finished reading “Haunting Mr. Darcy”and loved it too. What a unique perspective to write a variation on! Thank you for the ‘shout out’ as I am in great company! Thank you for your inspired blogsite and well written, thoughtful and impactful reviews! Happy New Year and Happy Reading!

    1. Thank you, Carole! It was a year full of blessings and I am so very thankful! I hope you have fun with your lis and graphs! I love making lists! So glad to hear your loved Haunting Mr. Darcy! Thank you for being such an active member and visitor to this blog – I love sharing thoughts with and hearing from you!

  21. Happy 2015, Meredith and Mr. Bingley! You’ve had another amazing year. What else could we expect. I really never thought I’d get so interested in a blog, but I suppose it has a lot to do with the topic. One of my goals this year is to become one of your “most active commenters!” I read every post, but I get behind on my emails. I love your lists and statistics, as well as your reviews.
    I have to be more disciplined keeping up with my emails as I’ve accepted the position of Treasurer of the Master Gardeners of Pierce County Foundation. This is a non-profit organization that started here in Washington State Pierce County and is now nationwide and even a few other countries. Many things are discussed in preparation for monthly meetings by email, so I now get zillions of emails. Well, maybe not zillions but a lot!!!!
    Again, Congratulations on a magnificent 2014 and the best for 2015.

    1. Thank you, Catherine! I’m so glad you are interested in my blog! 😉 Would love to have you as one of my most active commenters! 🙂

      Congrats on your new position! I’m sure that has been exciting – I can only image how many emails you must read each day! Glad you still have time to pay a visit once in awhile! Wishing you a wonderful 2015!

  22. Wow, what a year! I’m fascinated by the disparity in which of Jane’s novels used as inspiration – but I can’t say that I’m unhappy with it! Mr. Darcy is always my number one!

    I have tried to read a few non P&P novels over the years and tend to not finish them for various reasons (I also don’t finish a number of P&P inspired novels, but I guess there are just so many out there I find enough that I love and read over and over again).

    1. Thank you, Nicole! I agree…the disparity is noticeable, but also in response to the general consensus – Lizzy and Darcy are always in demand! Hope you find some new reads that are very much to your liking in 2015!

  23. So glad you had such an amazing year and here’s to an even better 2015! It was wonderful to meet you and Mr Bingley in person, what a great team you make! I’m hoping we can do it again soon. Thanks for the super kind words about my mash-ups and for the shout-out too, but it’s all on you, you make it such a joy to be here! Happy New Year and lots of hugs xx

    1. Thank you, Joana – you definitely are part of what made 2014 o special! I hope we do meet soon! If I had an award for the most romantic book, you can be sure The Falmouth Connection would have one! (Maybe I need to think about that for next year!) Thank you for all the friendship and support! Hugs to you! xoxox

  24. Great blog as always Meredith, I’m always looking out for your review on Goodreads when I’m looking for another P&P book to read. As for the type of Austen books & reviews I’m hoping you continue with more P&P books. I can’t get enough of our favorite couple.

    I’m glad I stumble across your blog as well as the JAFF Community a year ago. It has made reading so much fun. Who knew there were so many people passionate about reading & writing Austen inspired books. I can’t wait to read a few of your winners this year. I loved Lucky 13 as well… can’t wait for your 2015 reviews! Cheers to a great 2015 and happy reading!

  25. In my previous email, I forgot to congratulate all the writers who won one of your awards!
    Congratulations, Writers! Keep up the good work!

  26. I’ve been out of town and just saw your list, Meredith! I’m absolutely thrilled that Jane Austen’s First Love is one of your favorites for 2014, and I’m honored to find my novel in the company of so many great books by so many gifted authors! I wish you and all Austenesque followers the best year ever for 2015. I hope it’s a year of good health, good times, the achievement of at least one of your dreams, and that you enjoy dozens and dozens of great reads!

Your conversation and participation are always welcome; please feel free to "have your share."
