It is a new year, my Austenesque friends! And one of my favorite things to do at this time is look back and reflect on the previous year. What did I do in 2014? How much was accomplished? What were my favorite things about 2014?
In 2014, Mr. Bingley and I did a little bit less traveling than I did in 2013. But the trips we went on were quite a big deal! 🙂 First in January we went back for a second visit to Colombia to see our wonderful family there!
And in April we went to England, which was everything I dreamed it would be and more!
One of the best parts of going to England was meeting some lovely Jane Austen authors and friends in person! What a special treat!
After that, we stayed home and enjoyed our little piece of paradise. 🙂 We started to lay the ground work for our next big adventure – buying our first house! We hope this adventure will be fully realized in 2015. Stay tuned!

- Well…I do love my P&P variations, don’t I? Can never have enough!

Ratings Breakdown
- I’ve noticed I’ve been a bit more choosy with my 5 star ratings. After 5 years of reading and reviewing 300+ Austenesque books, I think I’ve become a little bit more discerning – not everything is a “5 stars…Amazing…Must Read.”
- I have a very low count of books receiving less than 4 star ratings this year (just 8 total), which I’m pretty happy about. That means I liked and loved a lot of what I read!
Jane Austen Novel Breakdown
- Ahem…so this definitely shows some disparity…wouldn’t you say? I seem to read way more P&P inspired Austenesque reads than other Jane Austen novels. LOL! (Might be because P&P novels are much more widely published!)
- The question is, are we happy with this disparity? Do we like it to be almost “All Darcy and Lizzy, All the time?” Or do we want to see more variety? (I’d love your feedback!)

I agree with you: I like very much the P&P versions and I would like to see too another jane’s characters like more stories with Emma and Knightley or Marianne and Elinor involved in mysteries why not? But it’s true that there aren’t as many novels as we would like about the others Jane’s books. I liked your awards, specially “the deception of Lyme” and “Emma and Elizabeth”, this last one I’m reading and I love it!.
I’m very happy because Santa has gifted me three austenesque novels following your suggestions: “Steampunk Darcy”, “Pemberley celebrations” (I’m reading the Christmas stories now…sigh) and “Mr Darcy came to dinner” so I think I’ll have a beautiful stories to read for next months!.

Thank you but your reviews with your set style and system are so much more thorough than anything I do. I am more “off the cuff” and keep thinking I should adopt (if that is fair) your way of saying what you like, what you didn’t like so much, why, with the setting and new characters delineated. Many times I will just skip some of those since I am sure people look to your review first and then why should I repeat everything. You are the best!

I have read several of the books on your award list and agree completely. Several of the others are on my TBR list and this just makes me want to get busy and read more. I took a little detour recently and have been reading some of the North & South variations. It has been a fun change and I do wish there were more but I am needing my ‘Darcy & Lizzy’ fix! 🙂
As for your question ‘do we want more variety’, I do like to venture to the other JAFF books as there are some that are very well written, but must admit, I love most reading about Darcy and Elizabeth. The two books by Joana Starnes where she combines P&P with Persuasion, then with S&S satisfied both needs. I liked how she brought in the other characters but kept D&L central. For me, that was a good mix.

I think we all need our Darcy and Lizzy fix and they simply have to stay central to the story. Maybe we need new adaptations to shake things up a bit, but I think any new adaptation would still struggle to change the (yet another!!!) universally acknowledged truth that no one does sexy quite as well as Mr Darcy 🙂

You’ve been so lucky with your reads this year that you’ve liked so many of them, it’s really disappointing when you spend precious reading time and then don’t enjoy the book. I have written myself a list of books I’m aiming to read this year and I’m pleased to say that quite a few of your favourites for last year feature, so I’m pleased to know I have some good reads ahead. Funnily enough I have set myself a challenge this year to read an Austenesque every month that isn’t based on Pride and Prejudice because the other works are all so good too, however, the pickings are slim! Happy 2015, Meredith and Mr. Bingley! You’ve had another amazing year. What else could we expect. I really never thought I’d get so interested in a blog, but I suppose it has a lot to do with the topic. One of my goals this year is to become one of your “most active commenters!” I read every post, but I get behind on my emails. I love your lists and statistics, as well as your reviews.
I have to be more disciplined keeping up with my emails as I’ve accepted the position of Treasurer of the Master Gardeners of Pierce County Foundation. This is a non-profit organization that started here in Washington State Pierce County and is now nationwide and even a few other countries. Many things are discussed in preparation for monthly meetings by email, so I now get zillions of emails. Well, maybe not zillions but a lot!!!!

Wow, what a year! I’m fascinated by the disparity in which of Jane’s novels used as inspiration – but I can’t say that I’m unhappy with it! Mr. Darcy is always my number one!
I have tried to read a few non P&P novels over the years and tend to not finish them for various reasons (I also don’t finish a number of P&P inspired novels, but I guess there are just so many out there I find enough that I love and read over and over again).

Great blog as always Meredith, I’m always looking out for your review on Goodreads when I’m looking for another P&P book to read. As for the type of Austen books & reviews I’m hoping you continue with more P&P books. I can’t get enough of our favorite couple.
