Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

THE PREMISE: Mr. Darcy is even more out of sorts at the Meryton Assembly, and astute and observant Elizabeth Bennet is quick to notice this newcomer’s physical and mental discomfort. She tries to ease the situation by telling him he doesn’t need to fear anything from her (she has a peculiar engagement to a naval captain) and by finding ways to help Mr. Darcy connect and converse with the other guests at the assembly. It is the beginning of a beautiful friendship…until unexpected feelings start to develop…and Elizabeth’s fiancé returns…!

WHAT I LOVED:

  • I Was Persuaded: A second novel by Emilia Stratford, author of one of my favorite reads of 2025 – Some Particular Evil? ✔️ A Pride and Prejudice variation with a touch of Persuasion crossover? ✔️ Elizabeth and Captain Wentworth growing up a childhood playmates? ✔️ You win, I’m easily persuaded to read this novel!
  • Captain Wentworth: I’m sure everyone would agree that our dear captain is a brilliant addition to any P&P story. I loved seeing his easy friendship with Elizabeth – I love that they are each others confidants. And how Captain Wentworth adopted the role of protective brother when he noticed which way the winds were blowing between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I also loved seeing Captain Wentworth become friends with Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy, and how the men all ended up helping each other with their romantic woes. The developing bromance was really cute too. Oh, and what Mr. Darcy did at the end… 🥰
  • Friends First: With Elizabeth faking an engagement, Elizabeth’s and Mr. Darcy’s relationship begins on completely different footing and travels a different course. It was so lovely to witness the very natural respect and regard that developed between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. Their feelings for each other developed quietly and gently in the most beautiful of ways. I loved all their moments together, how they both started to cherish each conversation, and how their undeniable affection continued to grow.
  • The Netherfield Library and Italics: I love when Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have a place that is special or significant to them in someway. In this variation, it was the Netherfield library ,which also housed a very endearing and adorable cat named Italics. I loved every encounter between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth in this library. And I loved how Italics was always a part of the action too. The scenes that took place here were precious, stirring, and sweet.

WHAT COULD’VE BEEN BETTER:

  • Just some small quibbles – maybe just a little tightening up in some areas, my own impatience with Wickham getting more page time, and wanting a little more for Captain Wentworth’s storyline

FINAL THOUGHTS:

➕  Elizabeth is more empathetic and engaged, Mr. Darcy is more receptive and relaxed.

🐈 A captivating and compelling tale about camaraderie, being crossed in love, unexpected connections, consequences, and a cute cat.

📗  Emilia Stratford once again delivers a Pride and Prejudice variation with an engaging premise, well-constructed plot, strong character development, and a deeply satisfying romance.

  1. So no Assembly insult? I like that Elizabeth tries to help Darcy rather than resenting him. I too prefer less Wickham! I do like the sound of this one.

  2. I read this a while ago and loved. Iam generally not a big fan of crossovers but this one was less a crossover and more a inclusion, so I was more receptive I think.
