Some Little Alteration – Jennifer Altman

What If Elizabeth Experienced An Altered Reality?

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Source: Review Copy from Author

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation

THE PREMISE: Minutes after receiving Mr. Darcy’s letter Elizabeth is caught in a storm and knocked unconscious. When she wakes she finds herself if an alternate reality – Mr. Bingley never came to Netherfield, Jane married Mr. Collins, and Mr. Darcy is a new acquaintance who did not just profess his ardent admiration and love the night before. Elizabeth is caught between her memories and this present reality. Is this storyline better or worse? Does she just have to accept this reality? Does she still have free will?

MY THOUGHTS:

🔀 I love the creativity of this premise – with slight touches of magic and possibility, Jennifer Altman crafts together a slightly altered reality that has readers, like Elizabeth, questioning which life is better….

🔮 I enjoyed the mystical elements of this novel – the locket, the cryptic replies from Mrs. Annsley, the dual realities. These all made the story more memorable and captivating.

💗 I appreciated all the soft and quiet moments where Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth were together – she is seeing him differently and there is a great deal less animosity in their exchanges. I also enjoyed the close connection they felt towards each other in this new reality.

⏱️ There were some bits that felt a little slow (post Rosings) and some with which I wish we could’ve spent more time (Mrs. Annsley and the overall reason).

✨ A great choice for readers who like to see a little interplay of destiny and direction with their Pride and Prejudice variations.

  1. Thank you for this review Meredith. I haven’t read this yet but it is on my list. It sounds similar to A Life Worth Choosing by Anngela Schroeder which has Darcy living an alternate reality. I really enjoyed that so am sure I’ll love this one too.

  2. Thanks Meredith. I enjoyed this book very much too. I might reread a life worth living as I like rereading books. I would rather read a good book again than struggle through a bad one once.
