An Accidental Holiday – Melanie Rachel + Giveaway

What If Mr. Bingley Was Injured On His Way to London?

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Source: Prize at JAFF Writer/Reader Get Together

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation Novella

THE PREMISE: It’s the day after the Netherfied Ball and Mr. Bingley is supposed to be on his way to London, but instead Elizabeth and Jane find him fallen from his horse, injured, and nearly frozen. Mr. Bingley is brought to Longbourn where he will stay until healed well enough for travel, and Mr. Darcy – who arrives to see to his friend – is also invited to remain at Longbourn. How does this change of plans change the paths for these two gentlemen…

WHAT I LOVED:

  • Ye Merry Gentleman Needs Some Rest: It’s the reversal of Jane becoming ill at Netherfield! While I have seen several variations with the premise of Mr. Darcy being injured and recuperating at Longbourn, I feel like Mr. Bingley being the one who is injured is a more unique twist. I especially love how Mr. Bingley’s being at Longbourn brought Mr. Darcy there too, in the same manner as Elizabeth coming to tend Jane. With Mr. Collins, Mr. Bingley, and Mr. Darcy all residing under her roof, I’m impressed Mrs. Bennet didn’t go distracted!
  • ‘Tis the Season to be Jolly: This novella is packed with scenes and exchanges that made me smile and laugh – a lot of wry humor and a lot of teasing. Some of my favorites include: Mr. Darcy trying to help Elizabeth with her scarf, Mr. Wickham’s comeuppance, the spirited discussions at the dinner table, and the invasions in Mr. Bennet’s book room.
  • Happiness and Cheer: Christmastime is almost here, and the mood is right. I loved feeling like I was a part of it all. The Bennet family was at its merriest – gathering greenery, bringing good cheer to their guests, ice skating together with friends, and abounding with their natural gaiety and perpetual lively spirits. This story evokes such feelings of warmth, happiness and light.
  • Mr. Darcy’s Going To Keep On Waiting Underneath the Mistletoe: I loved the mistletoe scenes in this story – they were a beautiful blend of swoony romance and lighthearted playfulness. I loved the whole progression of Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s relationship. Even for such a short time together, it felt like it didn’t accelerate too suddenly or swiftly. I loved how Mr. Darcy was so perceptive and observant and how they were able to have some candid conversations about some important and personal matters.
  • Where the Love Light Gleams: With Mr. Bingley injured and under her family’s care, Jane’s true feelings for Mr. Bingley are no longer reserved and hidden. Her love and care for him cannot help but glow. And Mr. Bingley (and Mr. Darcy) see it. I love observing how both men react to this development – how Mr. Bingley grows firmer and more decisive in his actions, and Mr. Darcy realizes Jane’s true worth.
  • Bonus Gift: I absolutely adored the bonus epilogue! Swoon

WHAT COULD’VE BEEN BETTER:

Nothing! This was everything an Austenesque reader could want in a Pride and Prejudice holiday novella

FINAL THOUGHTS:

🎁  All Mr. Darcy wants for Christmas… is Elizabeth’s heart!

😂  When Caroline Bingley’s machinations to control her brother are hilariously and oh-so-satisfyingly overturned.

✨ A very merry and festive read for Austenesque readers who are looking for something light, and bright, and sparkling to enjoy this holiday season.
