THE PREMISE: It’s many months after Lydia’s scandalous elopement with Mr. Wickham. Mr. Bennet has sadly passed away, and the Bennet women are uprooted, impoverished, and seeking means to support themselves. A kind-hearted and determined angel named Grace hears their prayers and makes it her mission to bring Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy together by any means possible…

MY THOUGHTS:

There are several things I immediately loved about An Angel in Her Pocket – the angel-inspired echoes of It’s A Wonderful Life, the dramatic alterations in the Bennet’s circumstances, the premise of an outside person or force wanting to bring Darcy and Elizabeth together, and the adorableness of a sweet child and her puppy! Brenda J. Webb wove all of these elements together in an enchanting story of hope, trust, and devotion, and poses the questions of fortitude and faith to our dear couple. Does love fade with time and separation? Can love endure obstacles, disparities, and evil schemes?

One element I greatly enjoyed with this novella was all the new original characters readers encounter. Elizabeth secures a position as a governess to young girl, Lady Isabella, who happens to be Mr. Darcy’s godchild. So in addition to our dear angel friend, Grace, readers will encounter the Crawfords, who are a wonderfully kind and affable couple, their precocious daughter, who sometimes can be a little willful, their sister, Lady Priscilla, who is just as determined as Caroline Bingley that she should be the next Mrs. Darcy, and Reggie, a rambunctious little pup who plays an important role in this tale…get it? 🐶😂 I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of personalities and dynamics these characters introduced.

While I adored Reggie and appreciated the drama and tension of his storyline, I did feel that it garnered a lot of focus and page time. I wouldn’t have minded a bit more time spent with Darcy and Elizabeth – maybe some more conversations in the park or some more of Ms. Webb’s skillful introspection and inner reflections. I was curious about their feelings through this time, the limits of their relationship and situations, and what evolved when they were apart. I may have missed it, but I was wondering what happened to cause Darcy and Elizabeth to not encounter each other in Derbyshire.

Despite that minor quibble, I was delightfully enchanted by this whimsical and heartwarming angel-inspired variation. It is a perfect choice for those craving some good cheer and holiday magic!
