Jane Austen’s World – Maggie Lane + GIVEAWAY!

Elegant and Encompassing!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Source: Review Copy from Publisher

In this attractive and accessible updated rerelease from Carlton Books readers will find a beautiful blend of history, analysis, and art pertaining to our beloved Jane Austen. With it’s large size, hardcover, and elegant design, this tome would look excellent either on a library shelf or displayed on a coffee table. But don’t be fooled by the slim spine and abundance of illustrations – Maggie Lane, a highly-respected author and acknowledged Austen expert, is no slouch when it comes to information and insight about Jane Austen! Through this one hundred and forty page book, Ms. Lane discusses and analyzes what is known about Jane Austen and her life, describes and explains the traditions of her world, gives a brief overview of historical events and socialdevelopments of the time period, and closes with a look at the present-day immortalization of Jane Austen through scholarly studies, script, film, and prose.

I, for one, really enjoyed and appreciated the layout of this book. As you can see in the video, each chapter is compiled of and divided into a collection of two-page vignettes – short and sweet! Giving readers an extensive yet fast-paced overview of Jane Austen’s life and times. The design of this tome makes it easy to look up a specific topic, whether it be Jane Austen’s relations on her mother’s side, her views on poetry and poets, or her visits to various seaside resorts. In addition, the “bite-size” portions of this volume are perfect for readers who do not have the time or the inclination to read a lengthier and more in-depth biography. I loved the breakdown of topics, valuable timeline and index, and the wealth of information and research that went into making this book! I’m so happy to own such a lovely treasure! I highly recommend!

Filming credit goes to Mr. Bingley! 🙂

Previous releases of Jane Austen’s World (it looks like each edition updates some of the vignettes to make them more current).  This edition made references to biographies and Austenesque novels that were published in 2012!

    1. Mr. Bingley and I have had a lot of fun working on these videos together. I think it will be something we do for any illustrated book I review! LOL! The music was a must! Thank you for the kind words!

  5. *gasp* Eeee! Oh my goodness I remember the 1995 edition. I borrowed it once from my library and spent hours pouring over it. Then I never could find it again. I totally missed the second edition. Super excited about the new re-release of it.

  10. I hadn’t heard of this book before, but I do have Jane Austen for Dummies, which is very informative and tells you about Regency life and you can learn about the different carriages (like the curricle) they used, etc. I think it also said that at house parties they used to stay all night because it would be too hard to drive home in the dark.

  14. Looks lovely! A local library had the ’05 edition and I tried to request it, but they discovered it was ‘lost’ and I never got to see it. Keeping my fingers crossed.
