~ From the Author ~

I’m so thrilled to be back with another first look! I almost feel like I can’t put a book out unless Austenesque Reviews has welcomed me for a cover reveal.

I’ll keep it short and sweet so you can get right to the excerpt and the cover. The premise of both the book and the cover came from me thinking, “I’ve never set a book at Ramsgate.” A Most Natural Consequence goes in its own different direction once my impulsive and desperate characters leave Ramsgate, but that’s where this forced marriage (but they’re already kind of in to each other) begins.

Just as constant as Austenesque Reviews, once again Evelyne Labelle at Carpe Librum Book Design created this spectacular cover. I mentioned the coast, said it was a forced marriage but without an excessive stretch of resentment, and this is what she came back with. I love the movement and energy she created! Check out that seaside. And yes, they do dance at an assembly at Ramsgate and I’m pretty sure Darcy was just as focused on Elizabeth as this guy on the cover is.

~ Book Description ~

She’s protecting her family from disgrace. He’s shielding his from slander. Trapped in a compromising situation, can they find a path to love?

Elizabeth Bennet is dreadfully impulsive. Traveling with her sisters to visit Ramsgate, the headstrong woman befriends a shy young lady despite also feeling awkward attraction to the girl’s stern older brother. But after she discovers her brash youngest sister has vanished in company with a rake, she turns to the handsome estate owner for help foiling the elopement.

Fitzwilliam Darcy’s curt exterior conceals a generous heart. Aware that his lack of forthrightness regarding a scoundrel’s nature has put others in danger, he agrees to assist the outspoken lady in distress. But when their scheme fails, he feels the only gentlemanly choice is to save the intriguing woman’s reputation by offering his hand in marriage.

Pretending it’s a love match to distract society from circling scandal, Elizabeth puts on a brave face while trying to uncover her husband’s true feelings. But though he’s slowly falling for his wife, Darcy fears old enemies will drag them down.

As tensions rise, will their bond break or grow into a happily ever after?

~ Excerpt from A Most Natural Consequence ~

Below is an excerpt that finds Darcy on a seaside walk from Ramsgate with Elizabeth, Kitty, Lydia, Mrs. Younge, and his sister Georgiana. Wickham has made himself scarce lately, and some of the girls are disappointed. Meanwhile, Darcy knows he’s recently insulted Elizabeth and her mother, and feels all sorts of awkward…

“Wickham would make a good husband,” Lydia insisted. “Anyone that handsome would.”

“He is not even in Ramsgate,” Elizabeth said matter-of-factly. “Just because a single woman goes to the seaside does not mean she must return home with a husband.”

“Jane will be quite an old maid soon, I declare. She is our eldest sister, Georgiana. Older than Lizzy. Lord, how ashamed I should be of not being married before two-and-twenty!”

“If only we could all have a seaside romance,” Kitty said.

“I should like to have a romance,” Georgiana said wistfully, and Darcy’s stomach twisted. Were such fancies typical of young ladies? If they were, it was something no brother should hear.

“A seaside romance would be just the thing,” Lydia agreed. “My mother encourages us all to get husbands before we go back to Longbourn. I had hoped Wickham might be the man, but he knows you better, Georgiana. If he likes you more, you have the greater claim, since you have known him the longest.”

Georgiana reached a hand into her pocket and then stopped. As much as he disliked the topic, Darcy was glad his sister talked with her friends rather than going off to read letters alone. “I, I could not say who he likes better. It is difficult to tell.”

“Well, I will take him if you do not!” cried Lydia with a grin as she linked an arm through Georgiana’s.

Kitty pointed to something and the three younger girls ran ahead, Mrs Younge a few steps behind them and admonishing them to walk like ladies. Darcy stood and watched them, and Elizabeth noticed how he hung back.

“I suppose hopes of romance and flirtation seem very small to a man of the world,” she said in an arch manner he supposed was typical for her. Or perhaps she was angry with him for his words last night.

Rather than agree and offend her, he observed, “Your youngest sister is taken with Mr Wickham.”

She instantly looked embarrassed. “I have noticed Lydia’s interest in him. My mother wants us all settled; we have only a thousand pounds each after the death of both our parents. As much as I think she is too young, I see no harm in knowing him better, even though it will come to nothing.”

He barked a dry laugh. “I have known him all my life, and I assure you he is not worth knowing.”

She stared, and he regretted opening his mouth. Why was he so unguarded around Elizabeth Bennet? He was never at ease around strangers, but he felt awkward around this handsome woman.

“I am surprised to hear that about him. He struck me as a modest man.”

“He has much to be modest about,” he retorted.

Elizabeth gave him an expectant look that said she expected him to elaborate. If saying the truth about Wickham’s vicious propensities would be difficult to admit to his sister, it would be impossible to a woman wholly unconnected to him. But those intelligent eyes of hers were insistent. He must say something.

“Mr Wickham has no profession and no friends to help him. His own choices led him to his current desperate situation, which is that he wants to marry with great attention to money. Your sister will be disappointed.”

Elizabeth watched the girls laugh and skip ahead together before replying. “Wickham has flirted with Lydia and me, and we have no money at all. He knows that. I think he is simply an amiable man, even if he knows his own appeal. He gives his smiles too freely, and it will force Lydia to face her own insignificance.”

She sounded sad, as though she would spare her sister from that trial if she could, even though Darcy could see that was the only way Lydia Bennet would learn anything. “Mr Wickham has eyes for all pretty women, and if they have a fortune, all the better.” He saw his sister coming back toward them, so he lowered his voice and said, “I regret speaking against your mother the other night. I suspect you did not need me to tell you that. So I must tell you, Miss Bennet, do not let your sister dash herself against the rocks of George Wickham.”

Georgiana drew his attention to the fishermen in the bay, and he left Elizabeth to join her.

“This is a severe look, Fitzwilliam. You dislike my friends, don’t you?” Georgiana asked gloomily.

He could not dissemble for his life. He might not like most of them, but he would not forbid the connexion. “I do not object to them so much that I would prohibit your friendship whilst you are in the same watering place.”

“You will make me give them up, won’t you?”

Why did she suddenly assume the worst of him? “I doubt you will see them after the end of September. But I concede that the girlish talk I find noisome and tedious is exactly what a fifteen-year-old needs.”

“I had thought since you spoke with Elizabeth it meant you approved of her. She is kind, and observant too.”

Darcy bit back the additional comment that she had low connexions and no fortune. “She is, and if you kept up her friendship and let Miss Lydia’s and Miss Kitty’s fade, I could tolerate that. But I still say she will not end up as well settled as you, and your friendship must ultimately sink. Your station will rise, and hers will at best stay the same, but in all likelihood fall. She has been set up in the world with nothing more than some wit and a pair of fine eyes.”

And without further ado….here is the big reveal!!!

(Expected release date March 2nd)

and the full wrap…

Dancing and the beach? I’m swept away. 🩵

As a beach girl, I’m in love with the rocky seacoast – the mossy green and turquoise seas are just so gorgeous! 🤩

I love how Elizabeth’s silky blue sash has movement just like a rolling wave. 🌊

It will be interesting how this new setting and new friendships change the course of Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s relationship. 📖

What do you think, friends? 🤔

    1. I’m glad you’re intrigued! I feel like this FMS sets them on a path to fall in love smoothly, and outside conflict adds the tension, not resentment between these two

  1. Lovely cover, and just a bit different than most JAFF cover art I’ve seen in recent months. Adding this to my Amazon wishlist!

  2. I completely agree that the silk sash has the movement of the waves. My eye was drawn to that and also to the beautiful blue hue. This is a great premise to set a variation in Ramsgate. I have always liked forced marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy. Thank you for the excerpt and giveaway.

  3. Please don’t enter me in the giveaway. This is a wonderful story, surprising in parts but totally unputdownable! I love this cover, the sash on Elizabeth’s dress is gorgeous, they compliment each other. Love it! 🙂

      1. I am intrigued by the idea of a FMS in which Elizabeth and Darcy are partners in managing the situation rather than enemies! And the cover is delightful!

        1. I meant this to be a top comment, to enter the drawing, yikes! Can you fix that for me, Heather, or should I comment again? ‍♀️

  4. I love the cover, the colors of the sea, Elizabeth’s beautiful sash that Meredith describes moving like a wave. The story sounds intriguing and, at first blush, Darcy at his snobbish best. However, there’s just a touch of give here because who could imagine Darcy allowing Georgiana to discuss a summer romance with the Bennet girls? Also who wrote the letter to Georgiana she is touching in her pocket? Enquiring minds want to know — guess I’ll have to get this book and find the answers.

    1. I’m thrilled it piqued your interest! Darcy is at his snobbish best in Ramsgate… but he really wants his sister to be happy, plus he can’t seem to get that Elizabeth out of his head..

  5. I love the cover. I would like to be at the sea shore at this moment with warm winds blowing at my back! 🙂 Congratulations on publishing another tale.

    1. I always look forward to a new Heather Moll book, but perhaps there’s a little extra anticipation this time. No one does forced marriage scenarios quite like her. I always appreciate the slow build she has with her characters but them being married and forced to be near each other… it just has this wonderful build to it that I find so deliciously satisfying!!

      1. Beautiful cover, all those beautiful blues against the pale, pale blue of the sea!
Love the fact you can’t see Darcy ‘s eyes so we can only guess what he’s thinking but for me Elizabeth shouts her feelings from the page!
Looking forward to reading this book.

  6. What a lovely cover! Great excerpt, too! Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the book. I’d love to read it.

  7. It really is beautiful. Colors, movement…. Standing still poses of Darcy and Elizabeth are so overdone, lifeless and well, posed.

    1. Lois, you were the randomly chosen winner of an ebook of A Most Natural Consequence! Congratulations. Message me at HeatherMoll @ heathermollauthor dot com to get your book!

  8. I don’t miss any of Heather’s books. She is one of my favorite JAFF authors! Her new novel sounds so good. I loved the excerpt and the cover is beautiful. I look forward to reading it.

  9. What a teaser! It’s really interesting that you’ve Kitty and Lydia in Ramsgate as well that sets it apart from the other variations. I could spend ages admiring this cover – love the colour scheme. Can’t wait!

    1. Thank you! It’s a unique setup, for sure! I’m so glad it piqued your interest. That pretty color sure helps!
