Austenesque Top Ten: Variations (2007-2011)

As you may have noticed, I’ve yet to do a Pride and Prejudice specific Top Ten list. The reason for that is the fact that I’ve read a couple hundred different Pride and Prejudice inspired stories and the task of choosing just 10 was a bit daunting!

So I decided to break it up with some sub-categories – variations, sequels, and modern-adaptations.  The category for Pride and Prejudice variations was by far my largest and it would be verrrrrrrry difficult to pick only 10 favorites, so I decided to break it down further by year.

This is the first of serval lists for my favorite Pride and Prejudice inspired novels!  We are taking it way back today, to the early days of self-publishing and Pride and Prejudice printed variations with this list of my favorite Pride and Prejudice variations published in between the years 2007-2011.

This is my seventh Austenesque Top Ten list.  You can find my other Top Ten lists HERE.

* These lists are based only on the novels I have read and reviewed on this blog and are my top ten favorites.

**These lists are subject to change.

Have you read any of my favorite Pride and Prejudice variations from 2007-2011?

Are any of them your favorites?

  1. Yes! These are all books I read when I first found JAFF almost four years ago. Mr. Darcy and the Secret of Becoming a Gentleman is a particular favorite, though they are all excellent. Great list!

  2. Well considering I’ve read all of these, I suppose we’re on the same page. LOL My all time favorite is Brenda’s Honorable Man, but I love them all. Now, I’ll have to go and check out how we compare on your other lists. Thanks, Jen

  3. Excellent list Meredith. Have read them all apart from Brenda Webb’s book. Definitely agree with your choices.

  4. Incredible list, Meredith! So many of these I devoured when I first found JAFF. Excellent choices and I have no doubt very difficult to narrow down. I think it’s time for me to re-visit some of these treasures. Thank you!

    1. Thank you, Cat! It was challenging to narrow it down! I can’t imagine choosing a Top Ten for all of JAFF! Impossible! Making this list brought back some wonderful memories!

  5. Meredith, thank you so much for including Rainy Days on your top ten favorite list – I am honored to be in such wonderful company! I love all the other books on your list and read them more than once.

    1. Absolutely, Lory! Definitely belongs on this list! Although, I have to admit Remembrance of the Past was nearly tied with it! Love your stories! 🙂

  6. Meredith, I am so humbled to be included in this list. I began my journey in JAFF reading these author’s books and to be listed among them Is a honor.

    1. Your book definitely belongs on this list, Brenda! I think this group is special because so many people, like you, found their way to JAFF through these books!

  7. Aaahhh! You just made my day, Meredith! Thank you so much for including First Impressions and for always being so supportive. You’re the best! And of course, you’ve included some of my favorite books by favorite authors. Congratulations to them all!

  8. it must have been very difficult to narrow down your list! I have read all but one and I just put that one on my wishlist (Maria Hamilton’s) but plan to bump it up to my TBR today! Thank you!

    1. Definitely difficult! 🙂 But also fun to spend time thinking about which books have stayed with me and have a special place in my heart! I think you will love Maria Hamilton’s story – how I wish she would write more!

  9. I have read all but Mr. Darcy and the Secret of Becoming a Gentleman and will read that one a.s.a.p. I have to say I have read and reread all of these!

  10. Hi Meredith!
I haven’t read any of them but I see two Kara Louise books in your list and I’ve read her “Pemberly celebrations ” so I imagine these two ones must be a very good choice since I enjoyed it very much. Happy Easter 🙂

    1. Ohh! You have a some treats in store for you, Teresa! I love everything Kara Louise has written, but these two are definitely some of my favorites of hers overall – you will love them! 😀 Happy Easter!

  11. Good list but a bit top heavy with the excellent Abigail Reynolds which leaves several other deserving writers unmentioned.

    1. Thanks for checking my list out. 🙂 I know some authors got 2 or more books on this list, but I had to go with what were my true favorites from all that I’ve read.

  12. Excellent list! I am so excited you are doing P&P top 10 lists as these are my favorite JAFF. I am happy to say I have read every book on this list, some more than once! Rainy Days and Darcy’s Voyage are my two all time favorites!

    1. Thank you, Joy! I’ll definitely be doing more of these…now that I made it a little easier with by sub-categories! Great choices with your favorites!

  13. I’ve read at least 8 of 10. I honestly can’t recall if I’ve read them all. I do shy away from the mature audience ones however I have read Abigail’s. My favorite here is pemberley’s promise. That must’ve taken lots of research on your part. It’s so challenging to recall them all after all these years plus now theres hundreds more.

    1. I love Pemberley’s Promise, it is definitely one that special to me! 🙂 The research was very fun to do, although it made me want to stop and reread all these books right away! Good thing I right reviews to help me remember all my impressions and thoughts!

  14. I only scored 50% of these as read. Of the other five, three are on my TBR list and the other two have just gone on my Wish List.

Looking forward to seeing the other lists very much.

  15. Fantastic list of wonderful titles. I’ve read them all, and the quality of the writing, love of JA’s characters, and the original plots still shine for me after a decade of reading JAFF.

  16. I have 7 of these and they are all great although Rainy Days has to be my favourite. The other three are on my wish list so maybe I will have to bump them up. Thanks for this list Meredith

    1. I agree with Dave re Linda Wells books. I was going to suggest Imperative as one of my favourites then realised it was 2012!

  17. Definitely a great list – the Memory series by Linda Wells would also make my list, plus the crossover novels by Joana Starnes. Have 83 in my P&P collection on my kindle. Picking ten is a very daunting task!!

  18. I haven’t read any of these yet so I’ll have to remedy that. I take my hat off to you Meredith (except I don’t wear a hat), for the reading and reviewing you do for this site. I’m an avid reader myself but I’d never get round to all the books that you do. At least we have this site to keep us on track!!! Happy Easter!

    1. Ooooh! Yes you do! 🙂 These books will definitely be ones you enjoy! LOL! I’ve been reading these books for over ten years! I’m so glad you enjoy the reviews and lists I do!

  19. I love all these books. A couple of my all-time fave JAFF novels aren’t on this list due to the time lines–I’d bet the big bucks they’re on the next one! We’re so lucky that such a high standard was set in the early days of JAFF. These authors inspired me and many others to try their hand at writing, so their legacy is far beyond this list. In addition, I see mentors here–writers who have given me excellent advice and cared about me as a person and a writer. (You know who you are!) Good books are released more frequently these days, yet in comparison, those listed here are still on top. Excellent selection!

    1. Very well said, Suzan! Thank you so much for checking out my list and sharing your thoughts! How lovely that these authors inspired and helped you become a writer yourself! There will definitely be more Pride and Prejudice lists! 😉

  20. Yeah, I can see why you felt the need to break it down to sub-sub categories. There are soooo many P&P ones.
I’ve read all, but two of these and gave them high ratings, too. And luckily the two I haven’t read are on the TBR pile to still read. 🙂
Look forward to more of your lists b/c I’m nosey. 🙂

    1. LOL! It was a clever notion, no? I’m glad to hear you thought well of the 8 books you read! Will definitely post another list soon! Thanks for checking it out!

  21. I didn’t know “Mr. Darcy and the Secret of Becoming a Gentleman” was an actual novel >.< I thought it was a how-to book. Darn. I'll definitely be checking that next!

    1. Oh it is! A lovely one! There is a book called Mr. Darcy’s Guide to Courtship which is a guide/how-to book. The two do have similar titles.

    2. It was posted as “By Every Civility in His Power” prior to publication, under username “mariafaith.” The author also has some excellent short stories she should publish in a separate volume. I wish she’d write more!

  22. I have read them all except, “Rainy Days”, mostly when they first came out. I thought they were all great.
I prefer reading a novel vs a novella. The novels seem to have more depth and involvement that makes you think. My favorite amongst them all would have to be “Fitzwilliam Darcy, An Honorable Man.”

    1. Great choice, MaryAnn! You should definitely try Rainy Days, I think you will love it! I’ve enjoyed some shorter works lately in anthologies, but I am with you, nothing beats a full-length novel!

  23. Meredith you really must read Imperative. But you must set aside some time as the two volumes total 1600 pages and don’t expect to get anything else done! You will be gripped from the first paragraph. I have no idea how many times I have read it now but I know there will be many more. Enjoy

  24. I have read a number of Linda Wells’ books. They are long but so fascinating. The beginning of Imperative alone has been a re-read for me on a number of occasions. I am also trying to get through her Keeping Calm on AHA. So I, too, recommend her for your reading pleasure.

  25. Thrilled to see my first published book, An Arranged Marriage, is on your list. Thanks so much, Meredith! I still remember those heady days of early writing and the fear and trepidation it took to put my work out there. And I definitely remember how kind you were to a first-time author. Your encouragement was and continues to be a treasure.

    1. So glad you put your work out there, Jan! You are wonderfully talented and your stories bring such joy to so many readers! They are ones I will always be happy to read again and again!

  26. Loved the list, Meredith! So nice to see some of my top favourites that drew me into JAFF in the first place. I loved them all, but especially Jan’s ‘Arranged Marriage’, Abigail’s ‘Last Man in the World’ and Lory Lilian’s ‘Rainy Days’ – great stories to read again and again!
