Giveaway of First Impressions by Charlie Lovett

Back in December 2014, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to read and review First Impressions by Charlie Lovett.  As the tagline says, this Austen-Inspired novel is about old books, unexpected love, and Jane Austen.  One of the things I loved most about this book is that has dual story-lines in two different time periods.  I loved both story-lines, the sweet friendship Jane Austen shared and Sophie’s mission to protect Jane Austen’s name!

First Impressions is now being released in paperback (just this month) and the kind people at Penguin Books would like to give away a copy of this new edition!

  1. I am always interested in reading of how writers give a life to Jane Austen since her letters were throw away. But throw in a love story – SOLD! I went back and read your review and noting your high rating this has to be a good book. Thanks for the chance.

  2. Intrigue, danger, secrets, and romance interest me about this book! 🙂 I tend to enjoy books with duo modern and historical storylines, too.

  3. I enjoy reading books with story lines set in both the past and the present. “Possession” by A.S. Byatt was a wonderful example of this…one of my favorites. 🙂

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  4. Just wanted to pop by and say thanks for the great review. Any book you recommend is a ‘must read’ for me. I can’t enter the giveaway, but it’s always great to know what great new things are out there. Thanks again for flagging them!

  5. The story premise sounds intriguing. I am still laughing over the names of Mr. Mansfield and Uncle Betram. I like authors of JAFF to incorporate names from other Jane Austen novels. I have not read this book and would love to win it! Thank you for the giveaway.

  6. This book sounds intriguing. Always like to come across something new. I can’t enter the competition because I don’t live in the States but just wanted to say thanks for the wonderful recommendations you give on this site. So glad I found it.

  7. Very cool! I think the part that struck me the first time I read your review still does. I like the dual storyline, but also the nods to more than one of her books.

  8. I love it when stories delve into the lives of beloved authors. I enjoy getting new insights into the inspiration for stories that have become favorites to so many over the years.

  9. I’m a big fan of historical fiction in and of itself, but to have an Austenesque run at it with the present day side really intrigues me. This one has been on my wish list for awhile so my fingers are crossed!

    1. Its great to get all that in one book – modern day romance and heroine who loves Jane Austen + a look at Jane Austen’s life and times. 🙂 Good luck, my friend!

  10. This book sounds intriguing! I enjoyed reading your review. Whether I am the lucky winner or not, I’m putting this on my TBR pile!

  11. Secret and romance back in Jane Austen’s writings as well her confiding in her friend the minister and in modern days where Sophie was relating to her uncle so the similarities reside. However, did Jane base her writings on someone else’s life or was it her own. That is the question that remains to this day.
I like to read a story within a story as to compare and contrast events.
This novel does sound interesting and I will have to put it on my to read list.
Thank you for sharing with us your thoughts!

    1. It was nice to see the parallels and the relationships between Sophie and her uncle and Jane and Mr. Mansfield were very sweet and satisfying to witness. I do think it possible that some of her characters and maybe even story-lines were inspired by real people. Being the talented writer she is, I don’t think she made anyone a carbon-copy, I think she still added her own originality to each character though. It is often surmised that her cousin Eliza inspired Mary Crawford and her mother inspired Mrs. Bennet a little. I think while there may be these little sources of inspiration, she made her stories her own. I hope you get the chance to read this soon, MaryAnn!

  12. Sounds interesting and I think I’d enjoy it. I can’t think of a book that I’ve read with dual timelines, but I’d like to try this one. I know this author has another book out too. The Austenesque and old books theme interests me.
