My Recommendation Monday – #4

Welcome to Austenesque Extravaganza, a month-long celebration of Austenesque novels and authors! My name is Meredith Esparza, and I’m an ardent admirer of Austenesque novels and your host for this month-long tribute to Austenesque novels and authors.

Today’s Austenesuqe Event is: MY RECOMMENDATION MONDAY

  • For this event, readers are given a scenario and are asked to recommend their favorite Austenesque novels in the comment section below. The purpose of this event is for readers to voice their opinions, exchange ideas, and maybe receive some book recommendations. Just read the scenario below and share your thoughts!

*Remember, each time you comment during this event it counts as an entry for the Amazing Austenesque Giveaway! Don’t forget to fill out this form so I can contact you if you win! (You only need to fill this out one time for the whole month.)

THE SCENARIO: Lucky you!  Your cousin, Cecilia has just become a fan of Austenesque novels!  For the past few months you have loaned her all the books from your personal library and she has loved them all!  Problem is though, Cecilia’s favorite Jane Austen novel is Persuasion, and…*gasp* your personal library is sorely lacking in Austenesque novels for Persuasion! Cecilia’s birthday is in a few weeks and as a surprise you plan to buy her some Austenesque novels for Persuasion as a gift!  The question is: which ones do you buy?

Cecilia would like some Austenesque novels for Persuasion. What would you buy her for her birthday? What are some of Your Favorite Persuasion novels?

  • Answers can include:
  • Sequels
  • Modern adaptations
  • Fan-fiction
  • Answers cannot include:
  • Novels that have nothing to do with Persuasion

Need help thinking of some titles? This list of Persuasion novels might help!

*The fantastic graphics you are seeing for Austenesque Extravaganza were created by the wonderfully talented Lady Turner! Thank you, Lady Turner!

  1. Definitely agree with Mayra. “None But You” and “For You Alone” by Susan Kaye. Also would recommend “A Modern Day Persuasion” by Kaitlin Saunders and “Captain Wentworth’s Diary” by Amanda Grange. All great books!

  2. I second None But You and add Persuading Annie by Melissa Nathan. It was a light, funny, well-done modern take on Persuasion that I actually found thanks to you, Meredith. (I’ve now passed it on to another Austenesque lover, so your blog post was the gift that keeps on giving.)

  3. dear Cecilia will be rcvng “captain wentworth’s diary” by amanda grange b/c it’s absolutely delish!
in October she’ll rcv “the deception at lyme’ by carrie bebris when it’s released, b/c her storytelling is superb. plus a mystery to boot!
for beauty, Cecilia will rcv “For You Alone (Frederick Wentworth, Captain Book 2) by Susan Kaye b/c the covers are perfection! + ” None But You (Frederick Wentworth, Captain Book 1} by Susan Kaye
    and for a contemporary take?
“Possibilities” (Book Six in The Austen Series) by Debra White Smith

i’m thinking she’ll be more than pleased and i’m looking forward to seeing {& hearing!} her response “)) …

  5. I haven’t read very many Persuasion variations or sequels (though I would love to), but I would highly recommend Abigail Reynold’s modern novel Morning Light which was inspired by Persuasion. 🙂

  6. I second your choice, Lieder. I too like Morning Light. The beginning is inspired by Persuasion but the rest of the story is something else. I would recommend Captain Wentworth’s Diary by Amanda Grange and Regina Jeffer’s Captain Wentworth’s Persuasion.

But if I would like to give Cecilia a birthday present, I would buy Susan Kaye’s Frederick Wentworth, Captain series with Book 1: None But You and Book 2: For You Alone. Even though I have not read it yet, it is an excellent way to begin her foray to Persuasion-inspired stories.

P/s: I thought I am Cecilia since I love Persuasion and my birthday is next month. 😛

  7. I haven’t read many of the sequels or retellings of Persuasion yet. I would give her Captain Wentworth’s Diary, because all of Amanda Grange’s books are good and well written. I agree with Faith Hope Cherrytea, I’m definitely looking forward to The Deception At Lyme by Carrie Bebris. I love a good mystery, so Cecilia would be receiving that as well. Also, I’m looking forward to reading Susan Kaye’s series as soon as I get hold of it. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. I’d consider buying an extra copy for Cecilia.

  8. Anne Eliot: A New Beginning because I love everything Mary does, and the Susan Kaye series because she seems to specialize in Persuasion and I like her varying points of view.

  9. Anne Eliot: A New Beginning because I love everything Mary does, and the Susan Kaye series because she seems to specialize in Persuasion and I like her varying points of view.

  10. And when Cecilla needs a break from the Frederickcentric Persuasion novels, go for the Mercy’s Embrace series by Laura Hile. Cecillia’ll need some laughter and some hope after all that agony! As well, Jane Greensmith has several Persuasion short stories in her Intimations of Austen that are wonderful.

  11. The modern retellings of Persuasion I’ve read have been great: Jane Austen in Scarsdale and The Family Fortune …

… However, my own To Read list has expanded in terms of Persuasion reads thanks to this endeavor, so I’d probably get her a sampling of those too – like Anne Eliot: A New Beginning (which sounds awesome) and Captain Wentworth’s Diary (because I love Amanda’s other Diary novels) :o)

  12. Hands down, no questions about it: I would hand her the Susan Kaye books. I see others have already listed them. She does a great job of getting into Frederick’s head and telling his story. I love to get to know his family too. Hats off to Susan and her writing! Jennifer G.

  13. I would recommend Morning Light by Abigail Reynolds as well! Great book. I would also suggest Capt. Wentworth’s Dairy. Another great novel! I have yet to read Susan Kaye’s books, but they are on my TBR list!

  14. I loved the Mercy’s Embrace series by Laura Hile, her books are wonderful! Right now I am reading Susan Kaye’s book None But You and I am really enjoying it. And I also really enjoyed A Modern Day Persuasion by Kaitlin Saunders.

  15. Speaking as one who prefers Persuasion above and beyond all of Austen’s delightful novels, I would enthusiastically recommend both Laura Hile’s Mercy’s Embrace and Susan Kaye’s Frederick Wentworth, Captain. Both series are magnificent. I also would seriously urge Cecillia to read Regina Jeffers’ Captain Wentworth’s Persuasion. I wish I could read them all for the first time again!

  16. Oh I must read Morning Light! So many recommendations!

From me, dear Cecilia would receive a Book One of Mercy’s Embrace, Book One of Susan Kaye’s series: None But You, and Possibilities by Debra White Smith! How wish I really did have Cecilia as my cousin!

  17. I would definately recommend Morning Light by Abigail Reynolds. (it is worth reading #1 first) I also enjoyed Debra White Smith, Amanda Grange, Regina Jeffers, Mary Simonsen and Susan Kaye.

  18. Persuasion is my third favorite JA book, behind Pride & Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility… I just LOVE Captain Wentworth!! I would have to recommend Captain Wentworth’s Diary (Amanda Grange), and then For You Alone & None But You (Susan Kaye).

Great recommendations here that I’ll be adding to my own list 😉

  19. The only two I’ve read so far I’ve really enjoyed: Anne Elliot, A New Beginning by Mary Lydon Simonsen and Captain Wentworth’s Persuasion by Regina Jeffers.

  20. Although ‘Persuasion’ is my favorite JA…I have read very little of the fan-fic. However…I have plenty on my shelf, and based on the recommendations here, I am looking forward to reading the Mercy Trilogy, Captain Wentworth’s stories by Susan Kaye, and Persuading Annie.
    We need MORE Persuasion!

  21. Persuaded to Sail by Jack Caldwell. Before reading that I never cared for Persuasion JAFF. Also anything by Lise over at DWG. She writes great Persuasion. I don’t think she has published any of her work, so I would have to print them out and nicely bind them for her 🙂

  22. Yay, found a new recommendation (Persuasing Annie)–thanks! Also love Susan Kaye and Mercy’s Embrace. Would also throw in Jane Austen in Scarsdale: or love, death, and the SATs
