Ardent Austenesque Admirer – Tamara

Austenesque

Everyone welcome avid Austenesque reader, Tamara!  I found Tamara on her blog, My Kids Led Me Back to Pride and Prejudice, last December! I saw she was participating in Austenprose’s Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge and wanted to check our her reviews.  After commenting on some of Tamara’s reviews, she returned the favor and started commenting on some of mine! I’m so happy Tamara and I our blogging buds!

You:  Tell us about yourself

Hello Meredith and fellow readers, I am delighted to be here, thank you for having me. Discovering JAFF triggered my obsession with anything Austenesque, to be specific Elizabeth & Darcy! Three years on and my obsession shows no signs of waning. I live in England with my hubby, three children and our dog. I am studying for my degree in social work, whilst trying to read every JAFF ever written!

Your Induction:

  • When and how did you discover the Austenesque/JAFF genre?  I was fourteen and desperate for another book to read when I discovered P&P on my mother’s bookshelf, it looked like a classic. I loved it, but that was it, I was a teenager and it was onto the next book. Eight years later and my partner and children bought me the Jane Austen collection as a present and Mansfield Park became my second favourite. In March 2013 I went online to find out if anyone had attempted to write a sequel to P&P (you can stop laughing now). I then came across the P&P bicentenary challenge on Austenprose to read anything P&P related and write a review. Within seven months I had read 40 JAFF’s, been to Chatsworth House three times, seen a theatre production of P&P, discovered Austenesque reviews, started a blog and was obsessed beyond anything I could have imagined!
  • What was the first Austenesque novel you ever read?  Mr Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange
  • What did you think of it?  I really enjoyed seeing what Darcy’s perspective might have been and was totally hooked, little did I know I had barely scratched the surface within the world of JAFF.

Your Habits:

  • About how many Austenesque novels do you read a month? A year? Onadmirer 1average forty a year.
  • Around what percentage of your total reads a year are Austenesque novels?  58%
  • Where/how do you obtain the Austenesque books your read?  Kindle, then if I really like it, I put it on my paperback wishlist.
  • What is your favorite time of day to read?  Anytime I can get! But I suppose evenings because that’s when I mostly get a chance.
  • What is your favorite place to read?  In the Garden but the bugs always annoy me so it is not often. I do most of my reading in bed.
  • What do you like to listen to when you read if anything?  I prefer quiet
  • What do you like to drink or eat when you read if anything?  I don’t drink Tea or coffee! (I know shock horror!) I have a hot Ribena (blackcurrent) and a packet of crisps. However NO crisps if I am reading a paperback, as I don’t want oil marks on the pages!
  • Do you read more than one book at a time ever?  No never, unless it’s for academic study.
  • Do you ever read the ending of a book first?  NO! I do not like spoilers! Although I did read one of my mother’s books recently when I was visiting (left my Kindle at home, really don’t know how it happened as it never leaves my side!). It was a romance that was so dire I had to skip to the end, only because not knowing the outcome would have bothered me otherwise.
  • Do you ever reread?  Yes my favourites, especially when I need to cheer myself up.

Your Collection:

  • Collectively around how many Austenesque works do you own? 201
  • Where do you store your Austenesque collection?  Kindle & Bookshelf
  • What format are most of your Austenesque books in – paperback, ebook, or audiobook? Ebook (Kindle)
  • How many Austenesque books are currently in your TBR at this moment? 94

Your Faves:

There were many I could not answer as I am obsessed with D&E, if it ever shows signs of abating I might be in a better position to answer the questions lol!

  • Minor Character Story: I have not read any but within a P&P JAFF both Jane and Caroline’s story in Pride, Prejudice and Secrets by C.P. Odom.
  • Austenesque Genre: I love variations, in particular stories where Elizabeth has to marry Darcy at the beginning, when she still dislikes him. You get a sense of relief because you know they’re married so even if there is angst you can deal with it. You also get two for one, because you get a type of sequel, as you get to see Darcy and Elizabeth during marriage. (

Your Desert Island 5: You are about to be stranded on a desert island for unspecified amount of time you must select what you will bring

Would You Rather?

  • Have Lady Catherine or Mrs. Norris as a mother.  Lady Catherine, I think her bark is worse than her bite.
  • Live in Bath or live in London.  Bath, I grew up in London but I prefer the country life.
  • Be besties with Eleanor Tilney or Georgiana Darcy.  Georgiana, I adore her and JAFF has definitely contributed to that.
  • Dance every set at a ball or go horseback riding through the countryside with friends.  Difficult to say as I dearly love to dance. I danced for 15 years, ballet, tap, ballroom and modern Jazz, however I would love to learn to ride and it is something I hope to achieve one day, so it would have to be horseback riding.
  • Marry Edmund Bertram or Edward Ferrars.  As Mansfield is my second favorite, it would have to be Bertram.
  • Attend a strawberry-picking party at Donwell Abbey or attend the theatre with the Gardiners.  Theatre and with the Gardiners, I love going to the theatre, so the Gardiners would be the icing on the cake!
  • Go shopping with Lydia Bennet or have tea with Mrs. Elton.  Lydia what fun! I need a new bonnet.
  • Discover and read the finished manuscript (by Jane Austen) of The Watsons or Sanditon.  Sanditon, because Jane wrote this in the last year of her life, I feel it holds a wistful sort of significance. That it puts us closer to Jane in regards to a timeline; It would have been great to have had the complete novel.

You Right Now:IMG_4614

  • What Austenesque novel(s) are you currently reading at the moment?  The Darcy Brothers by Maria Grace, Cassandra Grafton, Abigail Reynolds, Susan Mason-Milks, and Monica Fairview.
  • What Austenesque novels are on your wish-list? Is this a trick question? Lol I try not to let books stay on my wishlist for long but here are two that I hope to purchase soon. Mr Darcy’s Challenge by Monica Fairview and Undressing Mr Darcy by Karen Doornebos
  • What Austenesque novel do you wish someone would write? I would love a novel where Jane Bennet is the main focus and Elizabeth is the secondary story. I really think a lot can be done with Jane. She often gets a raw deal because she is so agreeable and kind in nature, she can appear almost vulnerable at times.
  • What do you love most about Austenesque novels?  You mean apart from Darcy & Elizabeth The history, romance, humour and the fact they keep our beloved characters alive. But most of all knowing someone else loves JA as much as me!
  • Where can we find you?

  1. Hi Tamara, it is finally nice to “meet you” as I have been stalking you and your blog for quite a while now but have never left a comment. I did try to register but for some strange IT reason, I could not. I think your blog is brilliant and very much enjoy reading it. I am very grateful that there are people out there like you and Meredith and all the fabulous JAFF authors keeping alive my obsession with D & E. Sense and Sensibility is my second favourite of JA’s books with Persuasion as third. Thank you for the giveaway it is very generous and kind.

    1. Hello Michelle, lovely to “meet you” too!!! Thank you for the kind words, I’m sorry you couldn’t register but I did change my settings a while back because of that, so it might work now if you want to enter giveaways! Meredith’s blog is great, I love reading her reviews and lists. I am glad you are obsessed also 🙂 I am yet to meet a fellow Janiete in person! So I am very grateful for the internet. Good luck in the giveaway!

  2. *waving* Hi Tamara! Love the answers! I love P&P minor character stories and there are some great ones you ought to look in to!! Envying your clutch! I want an Emma one. =D

  3. Another great interview of an Austenesque Admirer – I love reading these!

Loved hearing your thoughts, Tamara! I think you did a great job with your lists, especially the DVDs!

I think Pamela Aiden’s trilogy will always be one of my top favs, as well as anything by Abigail Reynolds. I also love the writings of Jan Hahn and Joana Starnes, so we have a lot in common!

Your answers in Would You Rather? were a lot of fun! 😀

Hope you enjoy The Darcy Brothers!

    Cassandra

    1. HELLO Cassandra, Yes I think we do have a lot in common 🙂 Did you see the “A Fair Prospect” trilogy on the shelf? I think it was the second or third JAFF I bought in paperback after reading it on my kindle. I am thoroughly enjoying the Darcy brothers, I haven’t had much reading time otherwise it would have been finished in two days lol Good Luck!

  4. Hi Tamara!! It was so nice getting to learn more about you, your reading preferences and habits. You chose some excellent books for your top books. However, with so many good ones out there, it can be challenging to narrow them down. Was that difficult for you to pick favorites? I know it would be for me. How fun to have been to Chatsworth three times!
Was the theatre production of P&P good? I saw it once here from a local theatre, and it left much to be desired. I am eagerly waiting for another theatre to put on the production.
    Happy reading!! =)

  5. What a wonderful interview, shared by two wonderful austenesque ladies ! And what a fabulous austenesque books collection ! But how can this be? No tea and no coffee, Tamara? 🙂 Shocking ! 🙂

    1. Hello Lory, thanks, Meredith’s questions were great if not challenging 🙂 My parents never let me have Tea or Coffee because of the caffeine they contained, by the time I got around to trying them I didn’t like them! Lol Good Luck in the giveaway!

  6. Yay! Hi, Tamara! So glad to see you on here and that you’re still reviewing. I definitely need to contact you so we can meet up. I have been horrible about getting around to that!

    1. Hello Leslie, I’m glad to be here! I am just about reviewing! If I’m not getting through a JAFF a week something is a miss lol! Hope the writing is going well? Yes you may just be the first Janeite I meet in person! Good Luck 🙂

  7. Hi Tamara! It is lovely to meet you there! I am relatively new to Austenesque and JAFF. I am so impressed with how many books you read. I am in the Western United States and it is great to read that you enjoy “crisps,” since I think we would call them “potato chips”; I sure relate to liking them but not wanting to get the telltale marks on my book pages. 🙂 I am looking forward to visiting your blog.

    1. Hello Paige lovely to meet you. If your new to JAFF then your definitely in the right place Meredith has lots of reviews! Lol the first time I went to America I kept asking for “chips” and getting “Crisps” when what I wanted was Fries (but we call them chips here). I had a crisp eating contest for my 16th birthday! Happy Austenesque reading and good luck in the giveaway!

  8. I really love this series! All the questions are so perfect…just what any JAFFites
would ask each other, if we were meeting
    in person.
This one was a great posting. Thank you,
Tamara. I have to add your blog to my
reading list now. I am so impressed at the number of JAFF you have read! Thank you for the generous giveaway also.

    1. Hello Susan lovely to meet you, yes that is true, definitely questions you would want to ask. Thank you I’m a little (lot) obsessed so once I start reading I cannot stop, I do love JAFF, I once read four in a week! Good luck in the giveaway!

  9. Hi, Tamara, and thanks for the very generous giveaway! Some lucky readers will certainly get to feed their obsession. 😀 I love how you went “total immersion” with JAFF once you discovered it—and that you credit your children in such an explicit way for leading you there.

    1. Lol “total Immersion” sounds better than obsessed! Lovely to meet you Abigail, when Meredith asked me to name some books on my wishlist I thought it might be nice for some Janeites to tackle their own! Good luck in the giveaway!

  10. Good day to you, Tamara. How wonderful it is to catch up with you again. You seem like you are so well grounded and then you pick shopping with Lydia? Really? The mental image of you with your three children trying to herd Mrs. Wickham in and out of the shops without being mortified made me chuckle. You are much braver than I, that is for sure.

Meredith, I’m just tickled that you interviewed Tamara. I’ve followed her blog for a while now and we were class mates for an online university class about great houses in English literature. She’s a hoot!

    1. “And a good day to you too, my lady” in July I will be a King also! lol I am quite reserved, displaying all the etiquettes require of a lady of good breeding however at times I wish I could kick loose, so I think Lydia’s influence might be of some use after all! Yet I agree the mental picture you paint is quite diverting! Bohemia I wish! The Link to the purse can be found in my reply to Stephanie 🙂 Good luck in the giveaway and thank you for the kind words 🙂

      1. Thanks, Tamara. I ordered the “Obstinate, Headstrong Girl!” purse. I appreciate the link. Congrats on becoming a King. It’s great to be Queen, as you shall discover this summer.

    2. Thanks for stopping by, Joy! I’m so glad you enjoyed Tamara’s piece. She is so lovely, isn’t she? I hope the next time I’m in England I will get the opportunity to meet her!

  11. Love the name of your blog and that’s neat how you found your way to JAFF and book reviewing. I love Mansfield Park as my second favorite. Mr. Darcy’s Diary was almost my first JAFF read too. 😉

Fun answers and nice to ‘meet’ you, Tamara!

    1. Hello Sophia! I see you popping up often on blogs. WOW Mansfield your second favourite you are singular indeed! Lol lovely to meet someone who MP is their second Fav! I am still in shock 🙂 Good luck in the giveaway!

  12. Hi Tamara! Your DVD collection puts mine to shame and I definitely had a chuckle about the “spare copy of P&P 1995”. I actually have one! Amanda Grange’s Darcy’s Diary was one of my early JAFF purchases, too. Have you read any of her other Austen hero Diaries? I bought Captain Wentworth’s and Mr. Knightley’s from the gift shop at Chawton on my visit there late last year. I’ve read CFW’s and Mr. Knightley’s is on my physical book TBR pile.

Thanks for letting us get to know you better. How on earth do you juggle a husband, three children, a blog AND studying for a degree all at the same time? *bowing down in awe*. Thanks also for the lovely giveaway.

    1. hello Angela! lol yes the spare, I have four! (so 5 in total). I have Captain Wentworth but have not read it yet. Please no need to bow down lol I may juggle but it doesn’t mean I don’t drop a ball occasionally (okay often!) My family are very supportive 🙂 Good luck in the giveaway! I hope to get around to Wentworth soon!

  13. Thank you so much for having me MEREDITH it has truly been an honour to appear on Austenesque Reviews. It is a lovely blog, a place where Janeites can discuss and read about anything Austenesque, especially books! Your personality really shines through and you are very welcoming, thank you! It was enjoyable to answer the questions and get involved especially since things have been so hectic I only get time to read blogs at the moment but I do like to comment, so I cannot wait for things to die down, seriously missing reading a JAFF a week! Keep reviewing & happy reading Meredith 🙂

    1. Tamara, it is such a pleasure to have you visit my blog! 🙂 The honor is all mine! Thank you for your sweet and kind words. I’m so happy you wanted to participate in this series, you are amazing and I’m so impressed with all you do. Your answers are terrific, I hope the questions weren’t too challenging! Thank you for sharing a bit of yourself with us and for generously sponsoring a gift card giveaway!

      1. Thanks Meredith! Not challenging! painful! lol please I hope this desert island has electricity? I am assuming so, If we can watch our dvds 😉 so I can bring my kindle with every JA & JAFF book every written and I can charge it! You can see I am taking this seriously 🙂 So glad we met! (sorry, think I posted an answer twice)

  14. Hi Tamara! I really enjoyed this post. Your DVD selections made me smile. I also started my JAFF reading with a diary, but it was Captain Wentworth’s one in my case. Some of your favourites I haven’t read yet but your top variation, ‘Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy: The Last Man in the World’ is my all time Austenesque no 2 so I commend you on your good taste! 😉

    1. lol thank you my dear, am I correct in assuming Mr Darcy’s Obsession is No.1 lol? I hope you are enjoying your dvds while you are recovering? As I said to Angela I have Wentworth I need to read it so many people have mentioned it recently! Good Luck Ceri!

  15. Hi Tamara! You’re the first person I’ve seen with a collection of Austen DVD’S that rivals my own! Well done! I also liked your answer about the second copy of the 95 P&P version (I have 3 copies myself). Lovely answers to all of the questions, I will have to check out your blog as I am similarly Darcy&Elizabeth-crazed! Oh, and if you haven’t read Cassandra Grafton’s trilogy, I highly recommend it!

    1. Hello Kim, lol I forgot to put Austenland in the pile! Oh yes I have 5 copies in total you can never have too many I say 🙂 Yes Cassandra’s trilogy is on my shelf and kindle, the garden scene in Bath is my favourite and (the highly improper gesture from Elizabeth 😉 Capital!!!) I nearly fainted, I could go on! Good Luck in the giveaway!

    2. Hello Eva, we have much in common! D&E, variations and forced lol marriages are top! it sounds too funny:) Surprised I fell so hard? Yes I confess so were my family but they love that part of me now. except when they’re trekking through Chatsworth House Garden’s for a special illumination at 7.30pm October, dark.cold & raining while I skip along with a hot chocolate 😉 The purse is from Cafepress http://www.cafepress.co.uk/+jane-austen+wallets?cat=202786 Good Luck in the giveaway!

  16. Lovely to meet you Tamara…always nice to see others that share our obsessions..a good place to find recommendations for new authors or titles too…Thanks for hosting the giveaway….Happy reading..

    1. Lovely to meet you Stephanie, I 100% agree!! You don’t just bump into Janeites on the street (most likely because they’re in a chaise and four!) Happy reading and Good Luck in the giveaway!

  17. Great getting to know you better Tamara! I love that you have an obsession with anything Austenesque, to be specific Darcy & Elizabeth. I’m guilty of reading anything P&P related, I just can’t get enough of them!

The more books I read the harder it is to have one favorite in a specific genre. I read some of the Favs you mentioned and will add the ones I have not read to my never ending TBR list. One of my favorite Pride and Prejudice Modern Adaptation is “The Trials of the Honorable F. Darcy by Sara Angelini”, there are some many laugh out loud moments…

Thank you for hosting another great Ardent Austenesque Admirer blog Meredith. I love getting to know everyone better! Hope your move is going well and you’ll be settle in with a few wonderful new bookshelves to make a home for all your collections!

    1. You sound just like me “to be specific Darcy & Elizabeth” 😉 The Trials of the Honorable F. Darcy is great I love the inclusion of Pemberley it was magical and so romantic and a judge is perfect for the taciturn and foreboding Mr Darcy lol! & Elizabeth’s karaoke dance:) Good luck in the giveaway!

    2. Thank you, Dung! You are so sweet! I’m really enjoying them too! We are wrapping up the move tomorrow! I have 5 large totes and 2 medium totes full of my books…they may have to spend several months in storage, but then they will hopefully be moving to a place of prominence in our very own home! 🙂

  18. Thank you for the informative interview. I must also confess that Elizabeth and Darcy and variations are also my favorite. The books where Elizabeth is forced into a marriage with Darcy ranks at the top of my list, too. I recently discovered your blog and have been receiving your posts. I am so surprised that you are such a recent convert to JAFF. Is the picture a purse? Where did you get it? I bet you get lots of comments on it.

    1. Hello Eva, we have much in common! D&E, variations and forced lol marriages are top! it sounds too funny:) Surprised I fell so hard, yes I confess so were my family but they love that part of me now. except when they’re trekking through Chatsworth House Gardens for a special illumination at 7.30pm October, dark.cold & raining while I skip along with a hot chocolate 😉 The purse is from Cafepress http://www.cafepress.co.uk/+jane-austen+wallets?cat=202786 Good Luck in the giveaway!

    1. Thanks Michelle, maybe it would grow quicker if I just purchased the paperbacks but I have to have the ebook as well 🙂 plus I would need a book nook, Meredith had a great picture of one on one of her posts and I fell in love with the idea. Good Luck in the giveaway!

  19. Hi Tamara!! So good to see you among the Ardent Austenesque Admirers! 🙂 I loved reading your review and I loved your collection! Wow, it’s impressive! It was lovely that you started reading JAFF with Mr. Darcy’s Diary. My first Austenesque book was My Jane Austen Summer, not one of my favourites but an enjoyable read all the same. 🙂 Thanks for the generous giveaway!

    1. Hello Maria, how are things on the continent? Lovely to see you here, thanks for the kind words. I suppose it doesn’t matter what we first read as long as it puts us on the path towards JAFF 🙂 Good luck in the giveaway! Happy reading my lovely!

      1. Haha! Everything is fine here, thanks! The weather has been awful lately, but at least I can relax with a good book! 😉 I agree, any story is worth reading if it lets us know the wonderful world of JAFF! Happy reading to you, my dear! 🙂

  20. Hi Tamara, nice to meet you!
It’s incredible the amount of novels you’ve read in so little time!. I wish I could read so fast LOL!. Pamela Aidan’s trilogy is one of my faves and I agree with you: a story of Jane Bennet as the main character would be something original and full of possibilities, why not?.
Thanks for the giveaway but don’t put me for it as I usually buy novels directly in the stores, you know, the classic way, LOL 😉

    1. Hi Teresa, yes I am a quick reader but not that fast, but JAFF has that “I cannot put it down” kind of quality:) The classic way lol since moving from London I do not have much access to little quaint bookstores, the ones near me are big commercialised stores that would not have the JAFF and Regency novels we like. No doubt I would find a copy of P&P (not that I am complaining you can never have too many) but that would be all, I would love to find a good book shop near me. Lovely to meet you.

  21. Hi Tamara! I loved your responses to all of Meredith’s questions. She certainly makes you think! I too have been obsessed with JAFF since I found it. I’ve even started looking for miniature portrait paintings at auctions. I currently have three. Love your idea of a Jane Bennet story. J. Dawn King currently has one in the works and I’m hoping it will be out soon. Her first novel is now one of my favourties! ‘A Father’s Sins’. Thank you for your generosity too!

    1. Hello Carole, yes the obsession does branch out I started buying Regency furniture! Thank you for the heads up on the Jane Bennet story I will look out for it, I have a Father’s Sin but have yet to read it, won’t be long now lol! Thanks the questions were fun! Good Luck in the giveaway!

  22. So glad to meet you, Tamara. I love reading about other’s favorites and always end up adding books to my Wish List. As I have only been reading any blog for a little over a year I know there are many I have not connected with…but I do note the bottom right list with all the blogs Meredith visits. I can’t keep up with the ones I do visit but I will have to visit yours, now. I, too, love the Darcy and Elizabeth variations and post my reviews on Amazon.

I do recognize so many familiar names here and in reviews…like old and dear friends. I love these communities and am so glad I found them.

I am obsessed with DVDs and own all the JA ones plus many of the Bronte sisters’ and other period ones (E. Gaskell has to be there). I just re-watched Austenland yesterday – a modern one. And I have to say I am finding more and more modern day P&P variations which are so good. Anji recommended several in her blog and I did read them – great recommendations.

Meredith, I did not realize you were in the midst of a move – I guess I missed that although I did know you were looking. Do hope all goes well there. I remember it used to take me a month to get everything unpacked after my many moves. But it was a good time to purge the closets – I need that again – LOL.

Thank you for sharing your comments and life with us, Tamara, and thank you, Meredith, for this delightful piece of sunshine in being able to meet new friends from other places.

    1. Nice to meet you too Sheila, Yes I also have on DVD North & South, Wives & Daughters, Cranford and The Forsyte Saga! Good Luck in the Giveaway!

  23. So wonderful to get to know you better, Tamara!!! We really should do this face to face someday 🙂
Thanks so much for the lovely mention, I’m so happy you liked ‘From This Day Forward’, it’s my first ‘baby’ so it means an awful lot!
Lovely to see you here and thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

    1. Hello Joana, lovely to see you here, yes I think you know my thoughts on FTDF 🙂 I do hope to do Regency week or Bath next year! Good Luck in the giveaway!

  24. Oh that DVD collection! And I totally agree with the relief you feel as a reader when Elizabeth has to marry Darcy at the beginning of a variation – because you just never know, and I’d rather know! lol

    1. Hi, Tamara. Your responses were so much fun. I found JAFF shortly before you did and can’t believe the variety out there. My DH led me to P&P….One day I may have the opportunity to visit Chats worth House. I follow your blog, but don’t always comment. Thank you so much for the generous give away. I enjoyed the class you, Joy & I took together. It was fun reading your comments.

    1. Hello, have have you been fellow student? I’m going again for my hen party, but I really want to do Lyme House but would like to explore it in peace and quiet lol! Good luck in the giveaway!

  26. I am amazed at your dvd collecton, I dont even think that my JAFF paperback collection can beat your dvd collection. Thank you for your giveaway. I can relate to the way you were introuduced to JAFF. I read it as a teenager(for english class), loved it and then went on to my next book. Many years later, I was bored one day and had recently learned about fanfiction, so I decided to google ‘best pride and prejudice fanfiction.’ From that day on I couldn’t stop reading JAFF.

    1. Hello Marcia aren’t you glad you looked it up otherwise I could still be ignorant to the world of JAFF and that would be a injustice! I am sure your collection will grow. Good Luck in giveaway!

  27. Hi Tamara, I’m very late is commenting, but I have to say I love the name of your blog. I plan to check out your reviews.
