Have you noticed, dear readers, that there aren’t many original images or portraits of our beloved author?
And then there is the controversial “Rice” Portrait by Ozias Humphrey. This portrait is named for the owner
Recently, while reading Jane’s Fame by Claire Harman I learned more about the lack of a reliable and original portrait of Jane Austen. In her writing, Ms. Harman argues the Austen family was filled with competent artists, and most likely Jane Austen’s likeness was probably taken many times, just not saved. Wouldn’t you just love to hear that someone discovered another portrait, painting, or drawing of Jane Austen? I know I would!
It seems that this possibility could be happening soon…Austenesque author and artist, Jane Odiwe, has recently been contacted by the Rice family to analyze and assess another portrait, possibly by Ozias Humphrey, that could very well be a family portrait or “Conversation Piece” of the Austen Family! If this is proven to be true, it might mean that the controversial “Rice” Portrait is a valid likeness of Jane Austen!
Isn’t that exciting?
What do you think?
Is this be the Austen Family?
Is that Jane Austen standing in between her sister Cassandra, and her brother Edward?
Is this another painting by Ozias Humphrey?
The lady on the right looks too elegantly dressed to be a vicar’s wife. So I’d say no.
